CVD Treatments
ACE Inhibitors
They block the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme, this enzyme converts angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 which is an important vasoconstrictor which helps increase bp
-
Patients bp will be monitored while they are taking ACE Inhibitors & regular blood tests are done to check that the kidneys are functioning correctly
Risk/Side Effects: dry cough, dizziness, abnormal heart rhythm & impaired kidney function
Calcium Channel Blockers
-
-
Examples: Amlodipine, verapamil & diltiazem
Risk/Side Effects: headaches, facial flushing, dizziness, swollen ankles & constipation
Statins
-
-
Examples: atorvastatin, simvastatin, rosuvastatin & pravastatin
Risk/Side Effects: headaches, dizziness, nausea & muscle pain
Anticoagulants
-
Example - Heparin: binds to the antithrombin 3, this inactivates thrombin which then does not stimulate the production of fibrin which reduces the chances of forming a blood clot
-
Beta Blockers
They decrease the heart rate & force of contraction which causes the bp to decrease as well as the heart rate
-
Risk/Side Effects: Cold hands/feet, dizziness, fatigue & low bp
Diuretics
-
-
Risk/Side Effects: occasional dizziness, nausea & muscle cramps
-
