Mr Birling: Start of play - keen to cement his social rise through Sheila's marriage. Insecure about his social status
To this character Eva was - simply cheap labour he did not think of her as a person
Mrs Birling at the start of play - socially superior to her husband and gets ebarrased by his social gaffes
To this character Eva was - An upstart who deserves what she gets
Sheila At the start of the play this character was- Happy taking charge of benefits of her social class - spending time in expensve shops
To this character Eva was - Someone beneath her social status who deserved to be fired out of spite.

Because of her sex, Eva was in a more vulnerable situation

Old: Set in their ways, more confident they are right and young are wrong
They will do anyhting to protect themselves and their reputation - Mr Birling's first thought was to cover the scandal
Young: More open to new ideas, change throughout the play and sympathy for working class, they accept their responsibility for their actions and effects
Much less to fear from real Inspector as they already admitted their role in Eva's death and suggests they will change

Even upper class women had limited choices over men. It is even worse for working class women. Eva encompasses this plghts and her life is heavily influenced by men she ecounters.
