- - - - Lack of clear process led to succession disputes- acted as a key factor for the break up of the kingdom
    - - People belonged to the same family line and spread their power through migration and inter-marriage. Had been used as a way to spread political authority from the center with 9 related kanda being sent out to different areas.
        
        However- kanda system caused tension as attempts to further centralise power threatened the traditionalism of kandas being independent in different parts of the kingdom.
  - - - Other five key provinces were administrated by subordinate governors.
- - - - There were outsiders and inhibitors (invaders and members of royal clans) that provided prominent social divisions in Kongo
      - Factions within society were determined by Kinship principles and conquered control of the state- stability of factions hindered at points of transitions between kings
        
        Marriages caused alliances within society- a division of labour between men and women where slaves were exempt
- - - - Slaves worked large fields which were for the nobility who were able to prioritize certain crops
      - Slave trade mode of production was dominant as it provided a surplus- collected annually in the form of taxes
        
        Permitted the capital to specialise in bulk goods for capital consumption while the other products were important for international trade
        
        Without this source the nobility would not have been able to life in the style of luxury that was a sign of class
