1900 - Present Changes to prisons
Different prisons for different types of criminals
.
Open prisons.
Maximum security.
Young offenders.
Open prisons.
This is where prisoners are not locked up in cells.
Prisoners are trusted to complete their sentence with minimal supervision.
They have perimeter security.
Prisoners are allowed to take a job outside the prison whilst they are serving their sentence.
Tis gives them the opportunity to reintegrate into society outside prison.
Also helps them to withdraw from the criminal behaviours that got them into prison in the 1st place.
Non custodial alternatives
1907
- probation introduced this is a period of supervision. No further punishment if they do not re offend.
1914
- Offenders were given a longer period of time to pay fines.
1967
- Early parole for prisoners who continually behaved well.
1967
- Suspended sentences were introduced. If they did not reoffend they would not be sent to prison.
1972
- Community Service. Offenders were required to do work in the community to repay their debt to society.
1990's
- Electronic Tagging. The offender has to wear a bracelet like tag on their ankle. This monitors their location and can be used to place restrictions on where they go and when. Also to set a curfew (times to be home)
All of these changes were made to hopefully deter people from committing crimes but id they did hopefully through education they could be rehabilitated so they didn't reoffend.
