why there was an increase?
People were doing more traveling
People were moving so didn't know each other.
Communities were no longer close knit.
Larger towns made it easier for criminals to escape.
There were dens or gangs of thieves.
Extreme poverty lead to a rise in survival crimes (stealing food)
why was there an increase ?
Poaching gangs that worked on a large scale.
As only landowners whos land was worth £100 could hunt.
Extreme povety lead people to poach to eat.
Normal people were restricted so could no longer feed themselves or families.
Tax was so high on imported goods.
Large areas of coast they were unable to patrol all of it.
Foresters Law
Foresters were used to patrol the forests and enforce the laws.
Suspects were dealt with very harshly.
Foresters were feared and hated by local communities.
1723 Waltham Black Act
Poaching was made a capital crime.
It was illegal to carry snares or own hunting dogs in a poaching area.
Many poaching laws were repealed in 1823.
