validity : reflects the complex reality of society (hard to replicate but captures details of society)
reliability : consistent in measuring a social phenomenon (very easy to replicate but captures less details of society)

what is science ?
Popper/Merton argue that science should be empirical (objective & value free) shouldn't hold on to/ try to protect any ideology
Durkheim and Marx both agree in principle, that socio should not be a matter of sobjective values
however this is ironic as Durkheim himself failed in operationalising concepts such as social solidarity
these 2 are failed empiricists basing their studies off of many assumptions e.g. Marx assumes that all structures intend to subjugate the proleteriat through the process of 'ideological hegemony'
