Chapter 14 Oral Presentations
Preparing for a talk
Practice your talk and prepare visual aids ahead of time.
When making notes, make them in an outline format and not full sentences. Memorize the opening and closing sentence.
Remote presentations
Must still be well organized and be visuallly pleasing to the audience. Make sure that the technology used is up to par and engage with the audience more.
When setting up make sure that no one else can be heard upon joining and make sure your set up is correct. Test everything in advance so you know that it is working properly.
Delivery of a face-to-face talk
Dress nicely and get there early so you can set up.
Don't speak in scientifc writing English. Speak in normal talking English. Speak slowly and clearly and stick to the time limit of your presentation. Make sure you're standing in an appropriate spot so everyone can see the screen and yourself.
Designign effective slides
Slides should not be text heavy they should be well desgined visually. If figures and tables are included give them a title but not caption.
Question-and-answer period
Make sure you're in charge. Be courteous and repeat the question so everyone can hear. If you don't know an answer then say that. If it becomes a bigger discussion, tell the asker to talk to you after the presentation.
Format of a Scientific talk
Organize your talk
A scientific talk has an introduction,purpose,experimental design, results, and a discussion/conclusion. The theme of your talk should revolve around a specifc topic (the purpose), and there should be an overall take home message.
It is important to know your audience so that ypu can set up your talk correctly and emphasize importnat things.
If your presentation is longer, end with an overview slide to recap the information.
