Final English Literature "Macbeth" Plan (The relationship epitomises Jacobean evils).
Violence & Deceit
"
Be
innocent of the knowledge, dearest
chuck
."
However, whether he is caring for her or being patriarchal, in both scenarios, Macbeth has regained control over his wife.
"be" = imperative verb, M's control. Role reversal.
"chuck" = term of endearment.
"innocent" = loving connotation. 1. M is protecting LM. But also vulnerable connotation, so 2. M is condescending.
Further VIOLENCE:
LM would have clearly gone against the plot to kill Banquo, so Macbeth reinforcing patriarchy actually leads to more blood, more murders, which the audience have to criticise.
Juxtaposition of the quote (care) and the context (murder). Exposes the
DECEIT
.
Witchcraft
"dead
butcher
(pejorative) and
his
fiend-like
queen"
"butcher" = links to regicide, and 1605 Gunpowder Plot.
"fiend" = links to witchcraft, and 1597 Witchcraft Trials.
"his" = LM has no power. Despite being the driving force behind the regicide, her only legacy is being M's wife.
Anti-Christianity
"Tis the eye of childhood that fears a painted devil."
LM might be caring for Macbeth. By saying "paint[ing]", which connotes stillness and lack of harm, she is reaffirming that Duncan cannot hurt him.
CONTEXT OF RELIGION: "Painted" makes it seem as though devils are not real, which would be challenging the Jacobean audience's attitudes to christianity and witchcraft.
"eye of childhood" = Lady Macbeth calls Macbeth childish, insulting his masculinity.
LM is a hypocrite: "fears" = She feared the corpse! "Had he not resembled my father..."
"a" devil = doubts the idea of the one devil in Christianity.
TROCHAIC TETRAMETER = EVIL THOUGHTS!!!!!!
Valuing family over country [Extract]
"We will proceed no further in this business."
"no futher" = This is one of the few times M stands up to LM.
"Business" = Job (euphemism) = Being Paid (no other reason to kill Duncan other than personal gain).
"Such I account thy love."
"account" suggests she is keeping a record, and has already debated their relationship before. Is this from her naïvity/fear?
Gives M a reason to kill Duncan: Their Love.
Macbeth would be valuing family over his patriotism for Scotland. This would not be well accepted by Jacobeans.
Higher class person refers to lower class person as "thou". LM is reducing M to lower status.
