Time in a Christmas carol
All ghosts visit in one night
all visit on christmas eve
attempt to change scrooge by sending him back or forward in time
Time was very important in A Christmas Carol as the novella emphasises on the fact that Scrooge is running out of time and would be doomed forever if he is not redeemed before his time is up
Each ghost encounter happens at night time
Ghost of christmas present
Shows scrooge everyone making jokes about him at freds christmas party
clock strikes one, wakes Scrooge up to him
Ghost of Christmas yet to come
Takes him into the future to people buying / selling his posessions
this makes him very sad and sees that no one truly cares and everone (but a couple) dislike him
Ghost of christmas past
Takes scrooge back to his old school where he is all alone
shows him Fezziwig
sees his sister bell
Also shows him little fan coming to pick him up from school
Marleys ghost coming into scrooges living room
Warns Scrooge about what will happen to him if he carries on with his bad ways and doesn't change for the better
Comes on christmas eve
Has been dead for 7 years at this point
Ghost take him back to a different period of time
different times of day
morning
afternoon
evening
night
Different events happen at different times during the day,
the time it takes tiny tim to die
makes scrooge change
"Tiny Tim, bore a little crutch, his limbs supported by an iron frame."
Cratchits in poverty
somebody dies at the start of a christmas carol and it would be a cyclical structure if someone died at the end (tiny tim) but scrooge changed and helped him
“Spirit, tell me if Tiny Tim will live.”-scrooge
Setting
London 1843
The end of the Industrial revolution
Christmas
Time of giving and love but scrooge is no that kind of guy and instead is grumpy and selfish all year round no matter the time, showing his true pre-change selfish character
Scrooge doesn't care what time of year it is to him itsd all the same, and nothing makes him happy or changes his mood even if its festive and happy christmas time
Because he was so unkind, antisocial and arrogant he had nobody to be happy with and celebrate with until he changed his ways
Selfish, self-centered, he only cares about himself
Industrial revolution, causing people to lose track of these traditions, making those people focus on business instead of things like family (which matters most on christmas), causing higher levels of poverty for those not born wealthy
Dickens, was born during this time period. He experiences both sides from this time (rich and poor), emphasising how lower class also should be treated well in these times, even if that isn't the point of the industrialization period.
Miser
winter time
Scrooge is warned about what will happen and is given time to redeem himself
starts with death and ends with a death being prevented due to scrooge redeeming himself
fezziwig
Too generous
a good role model boss for scrooge
Throughout the novella the bells ring, reminding Scrooge of time passing
Time isn't treated normally here
Clock strikes 2 waking him up, later wakes up again at midnight of the same day, fluctuates as much as needed.
the Spirits seem to have the ability to manipulate time
Questions
Q1 - What does time mean to Scrooge?means the ability to redeem himself
Q2 - What symbols of time are in the novella? The ghost of christmas past, present & yet to come all meet scrooge and take him on a journey in one night
(christmas eve)
Q3 - why is time an important factor in a christmas carol? Because we know that Scrooge is running out of time to redeem himself or else he will end up in limbo like Jacob Marley and the other ghosts who were outside of Scrooges window.
Q4 - how does the careful plotting of time help to highlight the message of the story? All of the ghosts visit scrooge in one night giving Scrooge enough time to redeem himself on Christmas morning with his changed attitude.
Q5 - I think that Dickens use of time in the novella is effective because we see that he realises he is running out of time to redeem himself and that tiny tim is running out of time as the cratchits know he is going to die.
