Measuring Thread Spacing in Fabric - Coggle Diagram
Measuring Thread Spacing in Fabric
Look at it
Count the number of threads in a given distance. Then divide the given distance by the number of threads to get the thread spacing.
Equipment
Magnifying grass or microscope for fabrics with a very small thread spacing
Scale to measure distance accurately
Strengths
Simple concept
Easy to do with the right equipment
Weaknesses
Tedious and time consuming
Errors could emerge due to mistakes in counting
Treat the fabric like a diffraction grating
Shine a laser (coherent light) at the fabric
Measure the distance between bright fringes if the diffraction pattern.
Strengths
Quick and easy to do
non-labour intensive
Weaknesses
Requires a laser
Requires accurate measuring technology
Equipment
Laser
Ruler (may not be accurate enough)
Blow wind at it. Measure the proportion of the wind strength that is blocked by the fabric. use that with the thread width to find the proportion of the fabric sheet that is thread and what proportion is 'hole'.
This would not work. It is far to complicated when the other methods are fine.
