Assignment 8A: Concept Map of CH14
Organize your talk
Identify the purpose/question and the take-home message.
Include: Title slide, first slide= overview of talk, next couple of slides= introduction/background and purpose of study, Final slide= conclusions and main supporting points.
Pick out the most important figure for your core slide, and know your audience.
Prepare an overview slide for longer presentations.
Preparing for a talk
Prepare your talk and visual aids ahead of time, using creative programs to help you organize your thoughts into a presentation.
It will be helpful to prepare a large print out of your content, to help memorize and understand the material being presented.
When making these printouts, focus on openings and closings of your presentation. As well as transitions and other quotations.
Designing effective slides
Think graphically. Readers usually prefer visually well-designed slides over slides with heavy text.
Make slides look attractive, but keep them simple, and pay attention to color and design, as well as the font.
Give figures and tables a title but no legend or caption, and do not clutter figures and tables.
Delivery of face-to-face talk
Arrive early, and dress appropriately. Use spoken English, stick to time limit and speak slowly, making sure entire audience can hear you.
Avoid distracting sounds, while keeping eye contact and using gestures (hands).
Be conscious of body movement, making sure your presentation flows well, and signal when the end is reached.
Remote presentations
same rules apply for remote presentations: be well organized, dress appropriately, use more visuals, contain text easy to read.
Know how to prepare for remote presentation, by utilizing creative programs like Microsoft powerpoint. Test technology before presenting to ensure no issues.
Engage your audience, making sure to check for questions and switch things up if you are not gaining attention.
Question-and-answer period
Ensure you are in charge but stay calm and polite.
Be courteous, admit when you do not have an answer, direct answer to entire audience, do not become frazzled.
Don't allow audience to interrupt your presentation, do not make up answers, and most importantly, do not argue with a queationer.
