THE NERVOUS SYSTEM - Coggle Diagram
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Links the Central Nervous System to the muscles and organs.
Gathers
and
transmits information.
Somatic Nervous System
A
single neuron system
with the motor neurons lying inside the brainstem or spinal cord and the sensory neurons lying in the dorsal root ganglia. Regulates
voluntary
movements.
Autonomic Nervous System
Controls
involuntary
functions.
Sympathetic Nervous System
The
fight
and
flight
. Increases the heart rate.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Calms
the body and
conserves
energy. Decreases the heart rate.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Processes and
interprets information.
Brain
Cerebrum
Controls
thought
,
movement
, and
emotion
.
Cerebellum
Allows for
balance
so body can move smoothly.
Brain Stem
Controls basic life functions such as
breathing
and
heart beat.
Midbrain
Controls some
reflexes
.
Pons
Regulates
breathing
.
Medulla Oblongata
Connects the
brain
and
spinal cord
and controls heart function, swallowing, coughing, vomiting.
Neurons
Individual cells that specialize in
carrying electrical signals.
The
building blocks
of the nervous system.
Dendrites
Sense and respond to
stimulation
from outside the cell and send that information toward the cell body.
Cell Body
Contains the
nucleus
and other cellular machinery.
Axon
Long tube-like
projection that extends from the cell body and
transmits signals
to other cells.
Spinal Cord
Controls the
reflexes
.
Sensory neuron
sends impulse to spinal cord.
Directs impulse
to motor neuron.
Does not involve the brain.
