A. Reaction of Copper Metal
Weigh 0.02g copper wire
Place in test tube
Under fume hood
<= 10 drops HNO_3, until no more chemical reaction
Record color
10 drops distilled H2O
B. Preparation of Cu(OH)_2
Shake test tube + 10 drops 6M NaOH
Record change in color and describe precipitate
10 drops of 6M NaOH
Mix well
Centrifuge for 30s
Test complete precipitation

C. Conversion of Cu(OH)_2 to CuO
Heat test tube from Part B
Record color
D. Dissolution of CuO
6M H_2SO_4 or <= 20 drops
Shake until precipitate dissolves
Record color
E. Reduction of Cu^2+ into Metallic Copper
Shake while + zinc dust
Shake until no further reaction
more zinc to make solution colorless
Record observation
Test for reaction completeness
few drops of solution into test tube w/ 1 mL 6M NH_3
If colored solution
Shake + more zinc
Repeat until colorless
Decant & discard supernatant
