Differentiating between different text types
Narrative driven
Definition: A type of writing which places strong emphasis on storytelling and captivating the attention of the readers through the narration of an engaging story or description of a series of events
Characteristics
Past Tense: Narrative driven texts usually use past tense due to their typical nature of recounting past events, which benefits the readers by creating a sense of time and sequence, aiding them in understanding the progression of events
Adverbials of time: Adverbials of time such as "early one morning" and "later that day" in order to provide context for the sequence of time, hence creating a more enjoyable and fruitful reading experience with better understanding of the plot development.
Use of adjectives: Narrative texts would have a more common use of adjectives to enhance the descriptiveness of the piece, benefitting the readers' interpretation of the deeper message as well as achieving the set up of atmospheres which convey certain emotions
Eg. Fictional narrative, autobiography, biography, memoir, legend
Purposes
To entertain
To reflect upon an existing social issue
To express a belief or display an ideology
Thesis driven
Definition: A type of writing revolving around a perspective, idea or position applied to a certain chosen topic of investigation.
Characteristics
Clear thesis statement: Thesis driven texts clearly convey the stance of the writer regarding a chosen topic of investigation, having a clear and assertive tone
Coherence: Thesis driven texts have a coherent and smooth overall structure with each paragraph contributing back to the main idea of the writing
Persuasive intent: Texts which fall into this category aim to persuade the readers to support a certain view by proving the validity and significance of the stance, using a combination of rhetorical strategies to enhance the persuasiveness of the contents
Purposes
To persuade the readers to support a certain perspective/viewpoint/stance
Eg. Persuasive essay, persuasive speech, thesis driven research paper
Expository driven
Definition: A type of writing that exposes or explains a topic using facts.
Characteristics
Explanatory: Relevant theories should be explained with clear and concise language in an informative manner to provide more in depth insights for the readers
Unbiasedness: The writing should not have a biased approach, therefore the writer to refrain the inclusion of one's opinions or emotions regarding the topic into the text
Presence of factual and organised information: Since the main purpose of the wiring is to inform, the presence of factual information presented in an organised way is crucial to achieve the purpose of the writing, aiding the development of a clear understanding of the topic with the support of facts originated from reliable sources
Purposes
To inform or explain a topic
Eg. Compare and contrast essay, cause and effect essay, process/how to article, problem and solution essay, descriptive essay, definition/explanation essay
