Environmental Issues in Werribee - Anais and Mia
Land
Noise Pollution
- The propogation of noise and sounding, creating impacts of humans and animals:
Airports, construction sites and places near major freeways and highways
When animals live in an area that experiences a lot of noise pollution, animals become anxious and worried and start to migrate away from the area letting plants overgrow.
If there are animals and wildlife in an area, try to keep the enviroment as peaceful as possible. Replicate a quiet enviroment and do your part to stop noise pollution. Use earplugs, turning off appliances and planting more trees to balance out the noise,
Food Availibility
- The supply of food within a community affecting food security:
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, there shortages of a lot of things like toilet paper, fresh produce and meat. This was due to a fight or flight response or FOMO which is "fear of missing out".
Food shortages can be caused by lots of different factors impacting manufacteres and carriers. These can be natural disasters, wars or a loss of ingredients
Only buy what you need, allowing people who are less fortunate to buy what they need. This also allows less food waste collecting up.
Fast Fashion
- Low priced, low quality clothing that moves with trends:
SHEIN
Demand for new clothes following micro trends. These trends are indorsed by influences on social media, ultimately bringing more revenue to these big but unsastainable companies.
Buy good quality clothing from respected and safe manufacterers like small businesses and organic places. Do your research on safe manufacturers and supoort them
Air Pollution
- The contamination of air particles:
2023 Canadian fires creating a smoke hazard in New York, reulting in lots of people experiencing bad asthma and breathing problems.
Air Pollution is caused when smoke or bad gases are released into the atmosphere. This can come from household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial and fires
Turn your house into an energy efficient house, install solar panels, use house hold devices such as dsihwashers and washing machines less and use other means of transports that are carbon efficient like bikes and scooters.
Bushfires
- A large, uncontrolled fire in scrub or forest:
The 2009 Black Saturday fires in Victoria. It is considered the one of the worst fires in Australias history.
Due to Australis majoritavely hot climate and dry weather conditions, fires can spark when extreme weather occurs.
Don't start fires on extreme fire days and monitor fire conditions. Always be safe around fires and proceed them with caution.
Littering
- Waste disposed incorrectly:
Waste collecting on beaches in Indonesia. Four of indonesias rivers are estimated to some of the most littered and polluted.
When rubbish is disposed of incprrectly it can affect wildlife. Plastic can be found stuck in the throat of smaller animals, creating breathing issues and eventually killing them off. It also collects in rivers and oceans, creating an alarming amount of waste.
Use public bins and make sure all waste is disposed correctcly. Sort waste into green, recycling and waste so that we can do our part to decrease waste.
Soil Acidity
- The measure of concentration of Hydrogen Ions in the soil solution:
Allowing weeds to thrive and taking over native pre-living plants
Not monitoring and frequently checking the comcentration in the soil
Monitor regularly and get rid of weeds that may cause problems for the soil and the vegetation.
Habitat Loss
- When natural habitats is no longer able to support its native species:
In Australia more then 45% of forests have been cleared to make way for urbanization since European colonization.
Forests and parks have been cleared to support the growing populaion cutting down millions of trees. This has impacted global warming due to the amount of trees being cut down, unbalancing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. This also doesnt support wildlife as it gets rid of their habitats.
While urbanization is important to support a growing future it is also important to protect the national parks and forests. We can also use cleared areas more efficiently instead of cutting down more areas.
Climate Change
- Long term shifts in temperatures
and weather patterns:
Sea temperatures rising in Melbourne
Pumping out tons of carbon emmisions annually aswell as burning fossil fuels such as coal
Be aware of your carbon footprint and make simple switches to reduce your carbon intake. Make concious choices that will limit the amount of carbon created
Animals
Illegal fishing
Illegal fishing
: Fishing doesn't comply with national, regional or global fisheries conservation and management obligations: Overfishing can damage and harm marine life
Overfishing can damage and harm marine life causing underwater animals to go extinct.
Private fishing bays for locals with effective enforcement. Strict rules that will apply to everyone who fishes.
Invasive species
Invasive species
: Animals or plants from another region of the world that don't belong in their new environment:
Threatens biodiversity to extinction which not only harms their species but can effect other wildlife chains.
Create incentives to conserve natural habitats and protect the species within them from unnecessary harvesting. Watching over them and making sure the invasive species are healthy and happy.
Water
Flooding
Flooding
: The covering or submerging of normally dry land with a large amount of water:
Caused by prolonged rain falls over several days but flooding occurs when water extends over what is usually dry land.
Building and development controlling. Flood proofing certain areas and building hard infrastructure to prevent flooding, such as flood walls or dams
Erosion
Erosion
: It's the Geographical process in which eastern materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water
Wind, water erosion, human activity, climate, soil erodibility
Using barriers, such as rocks, sediment control logs. Only use land to it's capacity and plant more vegetation
Salinity
Salinity
:Is the dissolve salt content of a body of water:
Rainfall interacting with geographical features over thousands of years
Caused by rainfall interacting with geographical features over thousands of years
Maintaining soil health and minimizing long fallows. Looking after the health of different wetlands that need maintaining.
Pollution
Pollution
: The introduction of harmful materials into the environment:
Drive your car less, don't burn your garbage and care for the environment. Don't rely on your heater and aircon as it takes up a lot of electricity that is dangerous to the environment.
Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires causes air pollution
