LAN hardware - Coggle Diagram
LAN hardware
wireless access point
allows wireless enabled devices to connect to a network with out cables
more convenient
they have less bandwidth then a wired connection
security is more of a concern
connections are some times not as strong
network interface card/controller
every computer connecting to a network will see one of these
these days they are not physically separate cards
they use protocol to determine how connections work
they allow the device to connect either wire or wireless network
router
sends data between networks
it creates a wan from numbers of lans
you can not connect a wan with out using a router
a router uses an ip adress
switch
sends data between computers on a LAN
they segment the work between data
switches learn which device is connected and understand how to forward traffic in a intelligent way
UTP
wired connections assure maximum bandwidth, security and liability
with twisted pair cables the wires are twisted around each other to reduce interference
normally a set of wires for transition and receiving
fibre optic cables
covers much longer distances
uses light to transmit data
the backbone of the internet uses fibre optic cables
