Project Title: Restoring rural Heritage Summary: Combining traditional and contemporary construction methods to meet sustainable standards while engaging with the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Your personal context
Even though I have grown up in London all my family live in rural locations across the uk, visiting them gives me the experience to discover uk heritage sites. My mum and I share a passion for old estate homes and we frequently visit them while on holidays. I always image how they could be modernised or restored if in need of it.
I have also grown up during the restoration of our London Victorian house, this included a kitchen extension and roof extension, I have seen the development and transformation modernising and restoring the house has been.

Historical Context
My theme is based around old heritage buildings in the UK from all different time periods, therefore I can research different periods of architecture and how they have developed and evolved over time, restoration may be more crucial for older periods of architecture or less popular periods

-
‘In the mid-19th century, people began to be more conscious of the conservation of old buildings, especially with the realisation of the deterioration of buildings over time.’
-
Cultural Context
Historic building preservation helps to remember a town or city’s culture and interesting past. These old buildings are visual reminders of an area’s cultural heritage and the people and industries that once played a key role in establishing the area and making it what it is today. Heritage building renovation is essential in ensuring that the nation’s history and culture are never forgotten.
The english heritage of buildings can strongly correlate with british culture and significantly how rural britain is viewed eg there is a classic stereotypical view of old heritage country manors and homes -many of which are open and viewed by tourists and members of the public, they are a pilgrimage of english history
-
-
Art + Design Context
there are many creative practitioners that are involved in similar projects of restoration, it is less frequently seen in many architectural practices but still occurance
the most common different styles of work are paintings and prints that have been made of old heritage buildings
i have previously completed a series of etching and lino cut prints of old churches that I photographed around the uk, this began my interest in the topic -linkage to my personal context
-
Pathway Context
There are many architectural companies that focus on historic restoration in the uk, these are specialist firms that have a soul focus
The beauty of a lot of these architects works is the incorporation of new/ modern materials and design ideas -to give an adaptive reuse approach to the restoration
-
-
End user context
one major benefit of my topic is the positive impact it will have on the majority of the public, rural landscape preservation and heritage buildings is part of the country's land and where we all live
it can be from a small to larger scale, a small scale of individual people and restoration of private owned properties or on a larger scale the english population and larger public owned landscapes
there may also be disagreement with people that aren't interested in restoring buildings, especially those living in urban environments
the most common end-user is a family/ couple and a private owned building and a small population in a town/ village where a larger building is present
wide demographic range of religions and cultures and the uk is a widely diverse country -linkage to cultural context
