Virtue Theory Challenges

Cultural Relativism
- Cultural Relativism refers to the different views on morality across varying cultures
- It means that different people identify different behaviour as right or wrong, relative to the culture they belong to – with no way to judge or determine any kind of objective or absolute moral standard
- Different cultures consider different sets of personal qualities as virtuous and would look to different role models as virtuous people
- The problem with this is that there is no method for deciding on a universal list of acceptable or desirable virtues
- E.G. In some cultures Sati, where a widow throws herself to die on her husband’s funeral pyre, was regarded as a virtuous act of loyalty whereas Queen Victoria showed her virtue as a widow by wearing black for the rest of her life
