Different types of Gender Stereotyping
Education and Career paths
The "typical" jobs based on gender
Men are Firefighters, police, doctors, or engineers
Women are teachers, nurses, and receptionists
"Over 575 million girls live in countries where inequitable gender norms contribute to a violation of their rights" (Jones, 2022). This includes education and employment.
To women work used to be a privilege and not a right
Women get get paid less money than men regardless if it is the same job.
“In 2024, for every $1 that men make, women earn $0.83.” (payscale, 2024).
Women are discriminated against in their education
When asked, 73% of women felt they had faced discrimination in education based on their gender, only 13% of men felt the same” (Sturgill, 2015).
" 66% of 4th grade girls say they like science and math, but only 18% of all college engineering majors are female" (Sturgill, 2015).
Many women are not seen in STEM
"In 2023, the gender gap in STEM remains significant, with women making up only 28% of the STEM workforce” (Piloto, 2024).
Roles and Expectations
Men and women can both do the same thing but be labeled with different characteristics
When in a leadership men are seen as a boss and women are seen as bossy
When crying women are seen as emotional and men are seen as weak

Women = cooking, cleaning, and childcare
Can have negative consequences such as, "men who hold more traditional gender role beliefs are more likely to commit violence crimes".
Men = Pay bills, fix anything that breaks, and make the income
The types of chores we do based on our gender
Men take out the trash and mow the lawn
Women clean the dishes, do the laundry, and organize
There are gender scripts for dates especially first dates
Men must pick up the women
Men must pay for the meal
Men must open up the door
Men are expected to plan the date
Women are expected to put a lot of effort into their appearance
Women are expected to engage and start the conversation
Women have been expected to wear certain clothes
Women were not allowed to wear pants
This is still the case in some private schools
Girls are cut back from quality education due to gender roles
130 million girls are not receiving education in the world (United Nations Human Rights, 2023).
Gender stereotyping in media and popular culture
Covers of magazines focus on body image
"87 percent of the magazine industry under the control of men, the Male-dominated industry publishes works from the view of the male-gaze”(Wang, 2021).
Fairy tales and books that everyone has heard have a strong emphasis on gender roles

Men are displayed as going on adventures and women are seen doing tasks like cooking and cleaning

The character appearances are stereotypical for each gender

The princess = Hourglass figure, long flowing hair, and pretty dresses

In 2019, 63% of major characters were male and 37% were female
Media has displayed that men do not show emotions
This effects men sharing about mental health and Men are less likely to get help for mental health disorders.
Media and popular figures holds the power to change gender stereotypes
Marvel movies putting women as strong heros
Miley Cyrus writing songs about women empowerment and blurring the lines of traditional gender fashion
Physical Apperance
Women are edited in ads to look skinner and have an hour glass figure
Eating disorders are more common in women
Women do stuff to enhance their beauty that men do not
Women shave their armpits and legs
Women wear makeup
Getting Hair colored
Women get botox more
Dress codes at work or school target women
No tank tops because women's shoulders are distracting
The length of skirts and dresses
Some workplaces force women to wear high heels
Body shape
Men = Strong and lift weights.
If not men are seen as weak
Women must be slim and toned
The tattoos society says women and men can get
Women = floral, emotional meaning, or delicate tattoos
Men = skulls or tough tattoos

Has negative effects
Boys are more likely to participate in risky behavior such as smoking
Girls are more fixated on their body
Strong influences such as parents and teachers can help break these stereotypes
Example: not saying I need a strong boy to lift this
Example: Not saying I need a girl to help me organize
Kids Literature can either decrease or increase gender Stereotypes

Toys are gender Stereotyped
Girls = dolls, makeup sets, kitchen and play food, and dress up sets
“We found that girls’ toys were associated with physical attractiveness, nurturing, and domestic skill, whereas boys’ toys were rated as violent, competitive, exciting, and somewhat dangerous” (Blakemore, n.d).
