Types of Chemical Reactions
Synthesis
General Pattern: A + B →AB
Example Reaction: 2 Na + Cl2 → 2 NaCl
Definition: Two different chemicals combined together to form a compound.
My Example: 2 CO(g) + O2(g) → 2CO2(g)
Decomposition
Definition: The breaking down of a compound
General Pattern: AB →A+B
Example Reaction: 2NO2 → 2O2 + N2
My Example: 2NaOH(s)→Na2O(s)+H2O(g)
Combustion
Definition: A chemical reaction between substances, usually including oxygen and usually accompanied by the generation of heat and light in the form of flame.
General Pattern: CxHy + O2 → H2O + CO2
Example Reaction: C3H6O + 4O2 →3CO2 + 3H2O
My Example: CH4 + 2 O2 -> CO2 + 2 H2O
Single Replacement
Definition: One atom is substituted in the place of another atom
General Pattern: A+BC→B+AC
Example Reaction: Pb+FeSO4 →PbSO4 +Fe
Zn + 2HCl -> ZnCl2 + H2
Double Replacement
Definition: Two ionic compounds that are exchanging anions or cations
General Pattern: AB + CD → CB + AD
Example Reaction: Na2PO4+3KOH → 3NaOH + K3PO4
My Example: 2K + 2H2O → 2KOH + H
Precipitation
Definition: when cations and anions in aqueous solution combine to form an insoluble ionic solid called a precipitate
General Pattern: AX + BY → AY + BX
Example Reaction: AgNO3 + KCl —–AgCl + KNO3
My Example: Fe2+(aq) + 2 OH−(aq) → Fe(OH)2(s)
Neutralization
Definition: When an acid and a base react to form salt water (involves H+ ions and OH- ions)
General Pattern: Acid+Base=Salt+Water
Example Reaction: HCl+NaOH=NaCl+H2O
My Example: HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → H 2O(ℓ) + NaCl(aq)
