Lean production and quality management
Cradle to Cradle
suggests that products, once they have been used, should be entirely recycled to create the same new products again.
To receive the official “cradle to cradle (C2C) certification”, products need to full several criteria, for example regarding:
the amount of energy necessary for the recycling process, ideally renewable energy
the amount of water needed as part of the recycling process
the reutilization of the material itself (recycling, strictly speaking)
the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of the company, for instance about fair labour practices.
Quality Assurance
no products are expected to fail
extends to all parts of the sales process
multiple people involved
Quality Control
a % of products are expect to fail and be discarded
quality is only for the job at hand
one person controls it
Methods of managing quality
Benchmarking
Well known example: Michelin Stars
Businesses take the market leaders and try to incorporate the practices that worked for them.
Total Quality Management
Can include Kaizen, QC, and Benchmarking
Everyone is involved
Quality Circle
Groups of employee volunteers (from different departments and hierarchy) meet to discuss ways of improving quality
Facilitated by a team leader
