Real World Application :check:
Used in clinical practice - Useful
- APD is defined by failure to conform to socially accepted behaviour - all deviation from social norms
- Norms also help in diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder ('strange' used to characterise aspects of disorder)
Shows deviation criterion has value in Psychiatry
Cultural and Situational Relativism :red_cross:
Variability of social norms between cultures/ situations
- Hearing voices is normal in some cultures (messages from ancestors), seen as mostly abnormal in UK
- Aggressive and deceitful behaviour is more socially unacceptable in familial context than corporate context
Means its difficult to judge deviation from social norms across different cultures and situations
A Comprehensive Definition :check:
Criterion is highly Comprehensive
- Concept includes a range of criteria separating mental health from disorder - covers reason we seek help with mental health
- Person's mental can be discussed with many professionals with different theoretical views (medically trained vs humanistic counsellor)
Means ideal mental health provides checklist to assess and discuss issues with many professionals
May be Culture Bound :red_cross:
Different elements aren't equally applicable across cultures
- Some criteria are located contextually in US and Europe, self-actualisation may be seen as self indulgent by others
- Variation of independence within Europe (high in Germany, low in Italy). Success in social, working and love life in subjective too
Means its difficult to apply ideal mental health concept to all cultures
