GREEN PRUNING
Different operations performed.
When is it performed?
Benefits!
The ideal time for doing the green pruning is in April, but it depends on the year.
Why?
It has to be done during the vegetative development phase, when it is possible to determine which shoots are fertile and which will reduce the quality of the harvest, but not too late, because then there is a risk of damaging the plant.
Avoid wounds and desiccation points.
Prevent diseases and plant mortality.
Improve the configuration of the plant for the next years and increase its productivity.
Reduce costs of phytosanitary treatments and pruning costs.
Suckers removal.
Top shoots trimming
Lateral shoots positioning and thinning.
Leaf removal.
Cluster thinning.
Upgrade the grapevine productivity
Elimination of suckers (new shoots arising from the trunk) to facilitate the phytosanitary treatments
Elimination of the shoots apices in order to avoid an excessive vertical growth of the plant

Positioning of shoots and elimination of secondary shoots. It is done in order to lower canopy density and better air circulation
Elimination of leaves along the canopy to better air circulation and the exposition of the clusters to the sunlight
Elimination of some cluster ( normally the smallest) to concentrate the nutrients to fewer clusters and avoid excessive proximity between clusters and possible damage.
