If the sides don't all join together, it's an open shape (it is not a polygon)

Vertices are corners
3D shapes have faces, not sides
The 'D' in 2D and 3D stands for 'dimensional'.
Where have we used shapes in other domains?
We have used shapes in fractions, we found 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4 of different shapes.
