Rudolf Bultmann
Rudolf Bultmann (1884-1976) was a German theologian who argued that, to be a Christian today, the only historical events you need to believe in are that Jesus lived, preached and died by crucifixion.
Resurrection was a myth, you cannot confidently believe in the resurrection without abandoning modern intellect
Must be demythologised, it can be seen as a ‘symbolic realisation’ that when Jesus died, it was not a defeat but a victory
the resurrection is contained within the crucifixion, Jesus did not conquer death by rising again (resurrecting), he conquered death by accepting it and staying true to his message even when he was nailed to the cross.
at Easter, Christians should celebrate the arising of faith in the early Church, NOT the raised body of Christ

argued that Jesus’ resurrection was the single most important reason why the Early Church grew, and is pivotal in helping Christians understand God’s plan for mankind
his justification is that the Christian belief about life after death and resurrection isn’t a myth, as the only way the Early Christian Church formed and grew like it did is because of their shared belief in a historical event, Jesus’ resurrection
there were dozens of 'Messianic figures' and if Jesus didn't actually resurrect and fulfil what he was saying the disciples wouldn't have bothered writing about him
Critics may question why Early Christians thought Jesus was the Messiah because Jesus had not done what the Messiah was supposed to do (according to the Old Testament): win a decisive victory over Israel's enemies and establish God’s reign on the world, if anything Jesus life was the opposite, hated by many and eventually killed. Early Christians, however, continued to regard Jesus as the Messiah due to the fact that his body was raised from the dead on the third day after crucifixion.
Jewish writers do promise that the Messiah would rise from the dead, and this fulfils that particular prophecy
