"barriers to learning"
students may be bullied, isolated or stigmatized if families can't afford uniform, trips, school transport, class materials + textbooks etc + may fall behind in school work
low income reduces likelihood of pupils having access to a computer + internet, space to work, educational toys, books + a well heated home etc
marketisation of schools mean schools in affluent areas will be better resourced + oversubscribed whilst socially disadvantaged students are concentrated in a limited number of increasingly unpopular schools
older working class pupils are more likely to work part time to support their studies or may have to care for younger siblings affecting attendance
EVALUATION
:( to say poverty causes poor educational performance is too deterministic as some from poorer backgrounds do well so would be more accurate to say poverty disadvantages working class pupils + makes it more difficult, but not impossible, to succeed

more advantaged children have a richer set of experiences in school, inside + outside the curriculum while for the disadvantaged children issues such as discipline + detention were more apparent
based on material inequality pupils developed stereotypes of 'chavs' + 'posh kids' with 'chavs' not expecting to do well
being able to afford private education greatly increases chances of elite uni education but private schools are only accessible to those with more money as opportunity for reduced fees is limited
Reay et al
many working class students intended to apply to their nearest uni due to costs of travel + accommodation
Housing
-
families living in temporary accommodation may have to move frequently + constant changes to school + disrupted education

Diet + Health
Howard
children from poorer homes have lower intakes of energy, vitamins + minerals
poor nutrition = weaker immune system + lower energy levels = illness = absences + difficulty concentrating
children from poorer homes more likely to have behavioural problems + engage in externalising behaviour which negatively impacts education
