Development of the Self
is the process of learning new things and building new skills—skills that help us increase our chances : of success, achieve our goals, and manifest our dreams.
Early Childhood
focuses on a period of remarkable physical, cognitive, social, and emotional change.
Infancy
at the start of this stage, children's behavior is dominated by reflexes, but by the end of it, they can use mental images.
Toddlerhood
during this stage, toddlers will show greater independence; begin to show defiant behavior; recognize themselves in pictures or a mirror; and imitate the behavior of others, especially adults and older children.
Attachment
the theory that humans are born with a need to form a close emotional bond with a caregiver and that such a bond will develop during the first six months of a child's life if the caregiver is appropriately responsive.
Adolescence
transitional phase of growth and development between childhood and adulthood
Identity
personal identity, or the distinctive qualities or traits that make an individual unique.
Autonomy
is all about having a choice and a voice.
Categorical Self
the realization that individuals exist as individual objects in the world, with distinct properties, such as age, hair color, and gender.
Social Categories
this involves identifying culturally meaningful classifications of people, their use in predicting and evaluating behavior, and how one's identity is connected to these categorization systems.
Gender
an individual's anatomical sex, or sexual assignment, and the cultural and social aspects of being male or female.
Race/Ethnicity
a shared culture, including language, food, music, dress, values, and beliefs, is a characterization of people based on common ancestry and history.
Personal Characteristics
involves all of the factors that influence how our personalities form and change over time.
