Deciding guilt or innocence - trial by ordeal - if jury unable to decided handed over to church for God to decide a persons guilt on innoncene. Hot water,Hot iron, cold water. If heal they are innocent if not then not innocent.
Wergild- Fines paid to ppl who have had a crime against them. Unfair paid depending on a persons status. People in power have more money given

Most ppl lived in small hamlets on farms in village very few towns. Tight knit communities. Everyone knew one another and strong sense of duty towards their community. crime fairly low
