Catholic Responses
Cardinal Ratzinger
-
Ratzinger believed that structural change like Liberation Theology will not bring salvation, only a right relationship with God will. Only God truly has the power to stop suffering, and it is his will for people to suffer, then this must be endured.
Ratzinger believed that Marxist-centric theories were unchristian, and he suspended Boff as a priest for a year in response to his work surrounding LT. In response, Boff left the priesthood.
John Paul II
Pope John Paul was Pope from 1978 until 2005 and dealth harshly with Liberation Theology, closing institutions that taught it and criticising scholars like Boff and Guitierrez.
He believed the business of the church was to teach Christ’s message of Salvation, not manipulate it into a Neo-Marxist regime.
