1 THE BIRTH OF A NEW MONARCHY
Five kingdoms

They were ruled in two of those kingdoms

In 1469, Fernando II of Aragón married Isabel I
Isabel was the sister of Enrique IV( Castilla)
Enrique died in 1479
Fernando inherithed the Aragonese throne in 1479
Isabel I wanted the throne of Castilla so she had to defeat Juana who was the daughter of the king
This civil war ended in 1479
They were both supported by Aragón and Portugal
Fernando II and Isabel I laid the fundations of the modern Spain.
The pope bestowed the title Catholic Monarchs on the couple in 1496 after they had conquered the kingdom of Granada and expelled the jews
A new monarchy, a composite monarchy

THE RELIGIOUS POLICY OF THE CATHOLIC MONARCHS
They imposed most of their authority,
The spanish inquisition was first established in the Late Middle Ages by the pope to punish heretics.
They didn't aceept non religious people and they killed them.
In 1492, they expelled all the Jews that didn't become to Christianity
The conversos where those who were the only jews who remained adn they were marginalised ( Called "Marranos")
However, "Sephardi Jews " where those who were expelled from the Peninsula and formed a very culturaly and economically active community.
In 1492, the mudéjares were foreced to convert to Catholicism
