Sustainability
and Green Building
Green Builsings: Green buildibng is not aproduct. Is a process that applies to buildings.
Triple bottom line

Green Gases
Carbon Offset (Provides LEED points): Is a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for or to offset an emission made elsewhere. It works by purchasing carbon credits which are sold in metric tons of carbons dioxide equivalent8 (tons CO2e). Ex>: Projects of wind farms, methane capture from landfill
SUSTAINABILITY (DEFINITION)
sustainability defined as: to create and maintain conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future generations.
GREEN BUILDING
DEFINITION: ’Green Building refers to both a structure and the using of processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operations, maintenance, renovation, and demolition.’’
The economic benefits include energy and water savings, increased property value, improved occupant’s presence, increased employee productivity, sales improvements and less infrastructure strain.
The social benefits include improved health, better lifestyle, more recreational activities and more opportunities to public transportation which result in more physical activity.
IMPACT OF BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION ON THE ENVIRONMENT:
36% of total energy use and 65% of electricity consumption
30% of greenhouse gas emissions
30% of raw materials use
30% of waste output (136 million tons annually)
12% of potable water consumption
Conclusion:
LEED rating system design and construction practices categories:
Location and transportation
Sustainable sites
Water efficiency
Energy and Atmosphere

STUDY PLAN
Section 02: LEED Rating system
USGBC
Mission: The USGBC is commited to transforming the way our buildings ans communities are designed, constructed and operated through LEED, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and porperous environment that improves the quality of life.
Vision: Buildings and communities will regenerate and sustain the health and vitality of all life within a generatio
Statement: USGBC will pursue robust triple bottom line solutions that clarify ans strengthen a healthy and dynamic balance between environmental, social and economic prosperity
7 Guiding principles for USGBC
Promote the tripple bottom Line (Planet, people, profit)
Establish Leadership
Reconcile humanity with nature
Foster social equity
Maintain integrity
Be Inclusive
Exhibit Transparency
USGBC Trademarks: USGBC created some guidelines to help its members and the larger community to use their brand assests consistently and correctly to maintain its remarkable position and to help protect their name and brand in the market
LEED Rating system
LEEDv4 System goals
Reduce contribution to Global Climate change
Enhance individual human health
Protect and restore water resources
Protect and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services
promote sustainable and regenerative material cycles
build a green economy
enhance community quality of file
LEED
MPRs are the Must-Do requirements for each project in order to be eligible for LEED Certification.
Must be in a permanent location on existing land
To have the same surroundings and be linked with the built environment. Cant be relocated or moved.
2.. must use reasonable LEED boundaries
The Gross floor area of the LEED project should be at least 2 percent of the gross land area within the LEED boundary. projects dedicated for parking cannot receive LEED certification separately
Must comply with project size requirements
LEED BD+C & LEED O+M Rating system
Min GFA 93 sqm
LEED ID+C rating system
Min GFA 22 sqm
LEED ND rating system
Should include at least 2 habitable buildings and be no larger than 1500 acres
LEED Homes
Should be defined as a dwelling unit by all applicable codes
Prerequisites
mandatory requirements for LEED rating system that must be achieved in order to be able to collect points for your project and earn certification. If you missed one prerequisite and achieve all other prerequisites and credits, you will not earn LEED certification. Make sure all prerequisites are achievable to your building before starting the project, otherwise it won't be certified.
Credits
There are seven impact categories
