INTRODUCTION
- Has 15-20 species.
- One of the important species is
Leishmania donovani.
- It's an obligatory intracellular parasite
- Affects dogs, foxes, jackel
HABITAT
Reticuloendothelial system
(spleen, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes)

LIFE CYCLE
*Completes in two hosts which are :
• Vertebrate host
( Man ,dog, rodents etc)
• Insect vector ( female sandfly )

PATHOGENESIS
Anemic condition
WBC gets less
Lymphadenopathy
Hepatosplenomegaly
Fever, Malasie , headache
Leucopenia
*Emaciation
LABORATORY DIAGNOSIS
Wet mount
WBC count
( 3000 /μl)
falls to 1000/μl
Peripheral
blood film
Needle biopsy/aspiration
Insect cell
culture medium

Hockmeyer's mediumMolecular methods:
- DNA probes
*Isoenzyme analysis
*ELISA
- Direct agglutation test ( DAT)
- IFAT
CONFIRMATORY TEST:
*Leishmann or Montenegro or skin test
• 0.2 ml of heat killed suspension
of Promastigote forms ( one hand)
• Injected in intraderm
• 0.2 ml of sterile saline
• left in same position for 48 to 72 hrs
Positive result: 5mm diameter of scare is seen
TREATMENT
• No specific vaccine
• Chemotherapy:
Amphotericin B,
Monomycin,
Pentamidine
