      - The intake of food is called ingestion
      - There are 2 types of digestion taking place
        
        Physical digestion by the action of teeth
        
        Food is chewed with the help of teeth to cut and grind them into smaller pieces.
        
        This increases their surface area and allows enzymes to digest fater
        
        Chemical digestion by salivary amylase
        
        Starch is digested into maltose by salivary amylase
    - - Oesophagus is a muscular tube that moves food from the mouth to the stomach through alternate waves of relaxation and contraction of its muscular walls
      - This type of movement is called peristalsis
      - The food present in the Oesophagus is called the bolus
    - - The stomach has a J-shaped, sac-like muscular organ that lies in the upper part of the abdomen
      - There are 2 types of digestion
        
        Chemical digestion by proteases
        
        Proteins are digested into amino acids by proteases
        
        Physical digestion
        
        by the churning action
        
        by the muscular wall
        
        causes food to break up further into smaller pieces.
        
        It also helps to mix food with gastric juice
    - - The small intestine is a long muscular tube which has an average length of 6 meters
      - The liver, the gall bladder and the pancreas are the organs that associate with the small intestine
      - There are 2 types of digestion
        
        Physical digestion through emulsification
        
        Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder
        
        It is released into the small intestine when fats reach the region
        
        Bile is not an enzyme. It is a substance to break up the fat molecules into fat globules.
        
        This process is called the emulsification
        
        It increases the surface area of the fat molecules so that they can be digested by the lipase faster
        
        Chemical digestion by various enzymes
        
        The pancreas secretes pancreatic juice and the small intestine secretes intestinal juice.
        
        These juices contain various enzymes such as
        
        Amylase
        
        Maltase
        
        Carbohydrates
        
        Proteases
        
        Lipase

    - - The large intestine has an average length of about 1.5 metres
        
        In the colon of the large intestine, water and mineral salts are absorbed into the body
      - Solid waste, called faeces, is stored in the rectum temporarily
        
        It is then expelled through the anus by a process called egestion
