ANCIENT PHILOSOPHICAL INFLUENCES, There can't be an infinite regress e…
-
- There can't be an infinite regress e.g. if the world stands on a turtle which stands on another turtle there'll just be a never-ending chain of turtles, there has to be an 'original turtle'
-
- Everything that changes has to have a cause because of the inductive proof that many things have a the four causes so all things must have four causes
WEAKNESS : This may just be a coincidence the same way that doppelgangers/stunt doubles exist, although they have similar features, it doesn't necessarily mean they have an exemplar version of them
Overcoming : it's highly unlikely that it is a coincidence, usually they are copies, the incidence of stunt doubles is a rare occurrance and this doesn't provide enough justification as for why the world of the forms shouldn't exist e.g. many different chairs that are similar usually originate from an exemplar prototype
WEAKNESS : third man fallacy reductio ad absurdum
- Plato assumes that everything must have a form
- Explaining an infinite regress of the forms - the form of the man - the form of the form of the man
- There can't be an infinite regress, that is an unreasonable implication
OVERCOMING : reject first premise coz not everyhting need a form, only imperfect copies do
- Particulars (sensible objects) need a form coz they're imperfect
- the form is the perfect and original version of something so there's no need for there to be multiple forms of a form because a form is defined as the perfect exemplar of a group of things which share the same feature
WEAKNESS : HUME Aristotle states that there's a singular prime mover but why can there not be multiple which are rotate positions as the seasons change Moves from saying that each thing has a prime mover to all things must have the same prime mover - fallacy of composition
OVERCOMING : Ockham's Razor Simpler explanations are more likely to be true compared to more complex explanations e.g. more reasonable to assume someone took a bus to skl rather than travelling to turkey first and then cycling to skl
Simpler to say singular prime mover than multiple so it's more likely to be true
