Supernatural
Lady Macbeth
-
Lady Macbeth reflects the gender roles in Macbeth. She shows how woman should not act as some actions are not seen as acceptable as they are seen as an outcast to society such as the witches. Shakespeare does this as this is what society believed at the time.
Lady Macbeth calls upon evil spirits to change her into a man and to take a feminine qualities away from her so she can do the things that woman are not known or allowed to do according to society
Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth into killing King Duncan which shows that she has the power in the relationship between the two of them. When Macbeth hallucinates Banquo, lady Macbeth has to step in to cover his back and to ensure they don;t raise any suspicions reflecting the switch of the gender roles that in Shakespearean times were not seen as normal
The supernatural could also be linked to gender and power. Lady Macbeth indicates this as she wants power from the evil spirits but does not want her feminine traits to get in the way which represents the witchcraft that is happening in James I reign and his interest in the topic.
It could also be said that due to James 1 believing in witchcraft, it could be said that he was paranoid about being threatened by others around him so he chose to blame it on witchcraft to divert his suspected paranoia.

Macbeth
Macbeth starts to hallucinate when he sees a dagger in front of him, reflecting his mental state and how he is deciding whether or not to kill King Duncan
This connotes that Macbeth is weak-minded unlike his physical strength. This foreshadows that something bad will happen to the king and what Macbeth may do next
"Come, let me clutch thee"
Macbeth also hallucinates Banquo and reflects Macbeth mind how he is "poisoned" showing that he is corrupt and should be stopped before he goes too far
This indicates to the audience that the supernatural is something to mess with as it can send you down a spiral and bring bad omens to your family and friends. It is there to also teach them how to avoid these circumstances that happen and to not be a traitor as this serves also as a warning
