Osmoregulation
Importance
-
If the concentration of water in the blood is too high, water will move into body cells by osmosis, and the cells may burst
If the water concentration in blood is too low, water will move out of the cells by osmosis, causing the cells to shrink
Kidneys help regulate water content by controlling how much water is reabsorbed and how much water is lost in urine
Role of Kidneys
Kidneys make urine by taking waste products out of the blood, and eventually excreting them
Substances are filterest out of the blood as it passes through the kidneys, this is called ultrafiltration
Useful substances, like glucose, ions and water, are then absorbed back into the blood, this is selective reabsorbtion
Nephron
-
Ultrafiltration
Blood from the renal artery flows throuhg a network of capillaries called the glomerulus and into the bowman's capsule
The high pressure in the glomerulus is creates by the narrow artery that goes out of the bowman's capsule
Bigger molecules like proteins and blood cells can't pass through the membranes between the bownman's capsule and the glomerulus, so remain in the blood
Selective reabsorbtion
Filtered liquid leaves the Bowman's capsule ad passes through the proximal convoluted tubule, the loop of Henle and the distal convoluted tubule
As the liquid flows along these parts, useful substances are selective reabsorbed into the blood
-
-
Excretion
Whatever isn't reabsorbed from the nephron into the blood (urea, excess water/ ions) continues out of the nephron wia the collecting duct
It then passes into the ureter and down the bladder as urine, which is then released from the bladder through the ureter
-
Homeostasis
Regulation of conditions inside the body to maintian a constant internl environment, in response to both internal and external changes
-
Negative feedback
-
If conditions change from a normal level, a response is triggered that counteracts the change
