Counter: The white space enclosed by a letterform, whether completely or partially.
Extenders: Extenders are the parts of letters that extend either below the baseline (descenders) or above the midline (ascenders).
Midline: The top of lowercase letters such as a, c, e and the top of the torso of lowercase letters such as b, d.
-
-

X-height: The distance between the baseline and midline of an alphabet. The x-height is usually the height of the unextended lowercase letters.

Eg:
Green on red can be very hard to read, as can red on blue.
Black on white is easy to read, and so is yellow on blue.

For hardcopy body text:
a serif font is preferred because the serifs create a line at the top and bottom of a text line and guide the eye across the page.
Sans serif text, however, does not have that line, so the eye has difficulty reading across the line.
Research has shown that comprehension of text blocks with serif is 75% - 80%, whereas comprehension of text blocks set in sans serif is 20% - 30%.

-
Leading (line spacing):
-
Measured by a value that includes the size of the type, plus the extra space
-
-
Font formats:
-
-
Underlined.
In multimedia applications they are used to indicate that clicking on the word will cause some kind of action. (ie: hyperlink)

Defintions:
Typography - the art and techniques of type design, modifying type glyphs, and arranging type
-
Proportional text:
A non-proportional font has letters equally spaced apart (eg. W and I will have an equal space between them, where the I is stretched)
A proportional font has spaces between characters that are larger or smaller for different sized letters (eg. W has a wider space than an I)
-
For soft-copy, body text (that is text viewed only on screen. Sans serif font is the best option)
