Biomes of the World
Taiga
Generally, taiga forests have long, cold winters (8–10 months), and short humid summers (usually 1–3 months).
Winter days are short and very cold.
Some animals that live in the taiga biome are: Reindeer, Great Gray Owl, Snowshoe Hare, Canada Lynx, Lemming, Martens, North American River Otter and Wolverine.
Its location covers most of inland Canada, Alaska, and parts of the northern United States.
Savanna
The largest savannas are located in Africa near the equator.
Savannas are characterized more by their warm climates than by their grasses and scattered trees.
The Savanna climate is hot with only two seasons: a warm wet season (6–8 months) and a hot dry season (4–6 months).
Some animals that live in the savanna are: African elephants, Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Wild dogs, Hyenas, Warthogs, Buffaloes, Zebras, Giraffes, Wildebeest, Gazelles, Antelopes, and Impala.
Desert
The best-known deserts include: the Sahara Desert, the Arabian Desert, the Western Deserts of Australia, the Kalahari Desert, the Mojave Desert and the Atacama Desert.
Desert biomes are characterized by extremely low rainfall.
The desert biome climate is extremely hot and dry, typically receiving less than 250mm of rainfall per year.
Some of the animals that live in deserts are: Kangaroo Rat, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Cactus Wren, Fennec Fox and Roadrunner Bird.
Tropical Rainforest
The climate of the tropical rainforest biome is hot and wet all year round.
Some animals that live in tropical rainforests are: Jaguar, Gorillas, Capybaras, Scarlet Macaw, Sloths, Toucans, Spider Monkeys and Rhinoceros.
They occur in Central and South America; in Western Africa, and the Congo, India, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Northern Queensland, Australia.
Grassland
Grasslands are entirely short to tall grasses with no trees.
This land type gets just enough rain to help grasses, flowers, and herbs grow, but stays dry enough that fires are frequent and trees cannot survive.
Some animals that live in grasslands are: Bison, Wolfs, Coyotes, Prairie Dogs, Hyenas, Cheetah, Lions and Tigers.
