Luther Challenges the Church
Martin Luther
parents wanted him to be a lawyer
he became a monk and a teacher
taught scripture at the University of Wittenberg
wanted to just be a good christain
in 1517, he took a public stand against the actions of a drair named Johann Tetzel
he was raising money to rebuild St. Peter's Cathedral and made money by selling indulgences
indulgence: a pardon of the temporal punishment in pergatory
it released a sinner from performing the penalty that a priest imposed for sins
Tetzel gave the people the impression that it affected God's right to judge from showing then they could pretty much buy their way up to heaven
Luther really didn't like Tetzel's tactics
so, he wrote 95 theses, or formal statements, attacking teh "pardon-merchants."
he posted these statements on the door of the castle church in Witenberg and invited other scholars to debate him
with support of the printing press, Luther's name and ideas were advertised all over Germany
his actions began the Reformation and led to the founding of Christain churched that did not accept the pope's authority
Luthers teachings
went beyond criticizing indulgences; wanted full reform of the church
teachings focused on three main ideas:
peopole could recieve salvation only by faith in God's gift of forgiveness. faith and "good works" were needed for salvation
all church teachings should be clearly based on the words of the Bible
All people with faith were equal. Thisbeing, people did not need priests to interpret the bible for them.
Would this make Luther a good or bad person?
