Luther Challenges the Church
Martin Luther
Family wanted him to be a lawyer
Instead he become a monk and a teacher
All he wanted was to be a good christian, not to lead a religious revolution
He taught scripture until his death
He taught at University of Wittenberg in the Germany State of Saxony
The 95 These
In 1517 Luther decided to take a public stand against the actions of a frair med Johann Tetzel
Teztel was raising money to rebuild St. Peter's Catherdral in Rome
He did this by selling indulgences
Indulgence: a pradon, it released a sinner from performing the penalty that priests imposed for sins
He gave the idea that by buying indulgences people could buy their way into heaven
Luther did not like Teztels idea
This lead him to write the 95 these
He posted this on October 31, 1517
This formal statement attacked "pardon-merchant"
He posted these statements on the door of the castle church in Wittenberg and invited scholars to debate him
Someone copied Luther's words and printed them
Luthers name and ideas were now advertised to groups and people all over Germany
The actions because of this lead to the Reformation
Reformation: A movement for religious reform
This led to the founding of christian churches that did not accept the pope's authority
Luther's Teachings
People could only receive salvation by faith in God's gift of forgiveness. "good works"" and faith were needed
All church teachings should be clearly based off of the bible
All people with faith were equal, people did not need priests to interpret the bible for the,
Religion: Johann Tetzel took advantage of religion by making people thin they needed to but their way into heaven
Are luther's ideas impactful today?
