HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS
Respiratory System
-
:All the respiratory organs such as skin, gills and lungs, have a rich blood supply for transporting respiratory gases.
-
Four characteristics of an efficient respiratory surface are: thin epithelium, large surface area, abundant capillaries, ventilation mechanism
-
Muscular System
Contractible: They are contractible. After receiving stimulation, they are capable of contracting, or shortening.
Extensible: Being extensible means a muscle can be stretched without damage by the application of force.
Excitable or Irritable: Muscles are Excitable or Irritable. This means that they are capable of receiving stimulation and responding to stimulation from the nerves.
Elasticity: With elasticity, a muscle is able to return to its original resting shape and length after being extended or contracted.
Adaptability: The muscular system is adaptable in that it can be changed in response to how it is used. For example, a muscle will enlarge, or undergo hypertrophy with increased work; but on the other hand it can go in atrophy, or waste away if deprived of work.

Circulatory System
-
-
The circulatory system is made up of blood vessels that carry blood away from and towards the heart. :
Some sort of fluid that conveys gases and nutrients. Of course in humans this is blood, but in insects with simple circulatory systems this is hemolymph
-
Digestive System
The digestive system is made up of the digestive tract (the gut) and other organs like the liver, pancreas and gall bladder. It is where your body breaks down food and absorbs nutrients
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is when stomach content moves from the stomach back up the oesophagus. Because it is acidic, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat.
The digestive system is a long, twisting tube that starts at the mouth and goes through the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and ends at the anus.
The digestive system breaks down food into simple nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
-
Skeletal System
The body is constantly remodelling the skeleton by building up new bone tissue and breaking down old bone tissue as required
Healthy bone needs a balanced diet, regular weight-bearing exercise and the right levels of various hormones.
-
Bones provide the structure for our bodies. The adult human skeleton is made up of 206 bones. These include the bones of the skull, spine (vertebrae), ribs, arms and legs. Bones are made of connective tissue reinforced with calcium and specialised bone cells. Most bones also contain bone marrow, where blood cells are made.
