Safety Measurements in the Lab
General Safety Rules
Students cannot remain in the lab without the teacher or lab supervisor responsible.
Clothings rules: No open shoes, tie long hair, no make up, no skirts, no hats.
Cotton Lab coat at all times is mandatory.
Lab safety measurements cover coomon routes of expore but are by no means a comprehensive list. These complement PPE, however they are focused on making sure the behaviour of the personel does not expose collaborators/collegues to risks. (UC Santa Cruz, 2024).
No drinking or eating is allowed.
No smoking in the classrom at any time.
Cellphones, tablets, laptops aren’t allowed in the experimentation tables
Follow instructions of handling
Don’t leave experiments unsupervised or with people outside your team
Accdidents must be reported
Safety Equipment
Besides all technical measurements, a lab must take into consideration its surroundings (Westlab, 2023). Safety measuremnets include:
Lab safety posters
Slip-resistant floor
Proper storage cabinets
Should be well maintaned and constantly inspected.
Labeled pipelines
Emergency Equipment
Extinguishers
Safety Showers
Eye washers
Medical Kit
Chemical Spill Treatment
If an accident occurs, personel must be aware of the emergency equipment available in the lab. They must know how to use it. (Stoney Brook University, 2024).
Protective Equipment
Safety glases
Gloves
Coat
Dust respirator
Vapour respirator
Goggles for splashes
Respirator for dust and vapours
Full protective suit and boots
Consult with surpervisor for special indications for handling substances
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is the proper and necessary equipment for handling susbtances and hazards inside a lab. As the name infers, protective prevents and minimizes the potential dangers hazrads have. (OSHA US, 2024)
