Despite the threat to his own life, Gloucester returns to arrange Lear’s rescue, sending him to Dover where Cordelia’s forces will be able to offer him ‘welcome and protection’ (line 91). The scene ends with Edgar’s brief soliloquy, commenting that his own troubles seem less now that he has seen Lear’s situation. Significantly, Edgar looks to the future, hopeful that one day he can emerge as himself again. For now he must ‘Lurk, lurk’ (line 114), keeping out of sight.
