Type 2 Diabetes
Symptoms
-
-
-
-
-
Recurring Infection
Example: recurring yeast infections in female patients with diabetes may indicate poorly controlled blood glucose levels

Pathophysiology
Overtime, pancreas cannot keep up with the Increased levels of Insulin; beta-cell failure appears and progresses
-
Even though Insulin Is present, the cell "resists" Its effects In transporting glucose Into the cell
Insulin cannot move gluocse into cells like normal, resulting in increased glucose levels in the bloodstream
Cellular damage occurs in the capillary endothelial cells of the retina, the mesangial cells in the renal glomerulus, and the neurons and Schwann cells in peripheral nerves because of the inability of cells to regulate the uptake of glucose
Insulin resistance along with the presence of lipid and thrombotic abnormalities and athersclerotic risk factors determines cardiovascular risk
Risk Factors
Modifiable:
-
-
-
-
Diet
Example: high consumption of red meat, high-fat dairy products, sweetened beverages, desserts, and processed foods
-
-
-
Nonmodifiable
