Building a resilient system- Describe the term STRONG RESILIENCE in relation to a companies digital systems
Strong Resilience- An ability to mitigate against risk whilst continuing to deliver products and services.
Software Updates and upgrades
Consider- Improved collaboration- Skype, Microsoft teams,Zoom
Real time Collaboration
Greater contact with team members- even remote workers on mobile devices
1000 attendees per meeting supported in teams
Time efficiency- Cloud based software
Techs not needed to install software
Uniform platform across different devices
Software always unto date. Outdated software often carries more possible breaches
REPLACEMENT AND REMOVAL HARDWARE
Reasons for change
New devices often have more security measures
Old hardware no longer supported EOS(End of Service)
If a piece of hardware comes under the EOS, the manufacturers will not provide any support. This can include repairs, limited technical support.
New hardware is more efficient.
Replacement parts also limited production period EOL-End of Life.
If hardware comes under the banner of EOL, then a date will have been set by the manufacturer a particular piece of hardware.
If a piece of hardware is reaching it's EOL date, say within the next 3 months, it would be wise to make changes.
ADDING REDUNDANCY
Resilience in a system- The systems ability to recover from a fault and maintain a reliable service.
Redundancy- A deliberate duplication of company components or data to insure the dependability of a system.
DEVICE HARDENING- Process/Method used to eradicate all potential risks for an attack.
Possible steps- Strong PWs
Disabled unused ports
Update systems with latest security patches
Remove all non-essential services and programs. The bigger the surface area of the system, the greater the opportunity for the attacker to access.
Set time limits on access, auto logging off.
LEGACY SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
What is meant by the term legacy? Obsolete, Rarely used.
Why go to the expense of replacing Legacy Systems
FINANCE- Old systems can be expensive due to the support costs for the infrastructure, software and hardware.
By decommissioning legacy hardware and software, an organisation can save up to 80% of the total cost.
SUSTAINABILITY- Legacy hardware has higher power consumption. Moving the data to a new system will contribute towards Green IT
REDUCTION IN RISKS TO THE BUSINESS- Legacy hardware can be unreliable and some software is no longer supported.
Also an organisation can receive fines if their systems no longer comply with current legislation and regulation requirements.
MAINTAINING EFFECTIVE BACKUPS
Full- Every file and folder stored on the system is backed up.
INCREMENTAL- Only backs up files that have been updated since the last backup.
DIFFERENTIAL- will continue to backup copies of files that have changed since the last backup.
MIRROR- Backs up everything on the system including OS, applications, config files, booting procedures and hidden files.
BACKUP LOCATION TERMS
On- Premises, Backup saved onto an in-house storage system, storage server, tape/disk
OFF-site/remote,backing up critical data from in-house computer system and storing in off site location.
