Chapter 16 Research Proposals
Funding is needed in order to conduct research and to get that funding scientists submiting a grant application.
Abstract
The abstract is meant to summarize the proposal, so it should include all the main points covered inthe proposal. A statement of need should also be included.
the first and last sentences of the abstract are important because the arer power positions. They should introduce the topic and explain why it is important.
Make sure the objective of the proposal is clearly stated.
Background
Provide context and results for each aim
This is where the reader needs to be convinced that the specific aims will have a great impact once achieved. The background can be one section or split into subsections.
Impact and Significance
End with a broad impact statement. The focus should be on how humans will benefit.
Additional Proposal Components
Components and Format
Follow intrsuctions to a T.
Your proposal should answer: why this project? Why you? Why at your institution? Why this sponsor? Why now?
Structure
Abstract, Specific aims, backgrounds, research design, significance.
Specific Aims
can be separate or combined with the abstract.
these should be a list and in boldface or highlighted. each one can be followed by a short paragraph describing the proposed approach.
Research and Design
Describe the approach for each specific aim in detail
This sections should explain how you gathered your data and came to your conclusion, what you expect to add to the topic, what you expect to come from your experiement, alternate approaches, and the implications your project will have.
Organize into subsections
Give subsections the same titles as your specific aims so they can easily be found.
