SAC 1 - Brainstorming and Research
Setting
Majority of the short film will be shot in Gavin's house and then as the story progress will follow him on his way to the City,
Gavin's house, we will be including shots of the surrounding of Gavin's house and i would like to include shots that show Alex as he prepares to leave.
Gavin's neighborhood, we will be using the streets of Gavin's neighborhood as well as the park that is near his house to shoot some scenes in which show Alex running away.
City, the city will mainly consist of shots that we take showing the visual scenery of the beautiful Melbourne city and as well as the shot of Alex as he stands staring at where he is now.
Characters
Character #2: Alex's father
Alex's father will play a significant role in Alex as a character, he is the conflict of the film and acts as the reason why Alex feels like he needs to leave. I'm considering making his character non-visible to represent his absence in Alex's life and that shows he does not care for his son in a way a typical father would. By showing Alex's father as a only a voice, I feel as if it would have a much more powerful effect on the story rather than giving him a face. :
Our protagonist will be a teenage boy, Alex who leaves his home after a heated argument with his father, Greg in which he adventures his neighborhood reflecting on his life and freedom after leaving his father.
Alex and his father's relationship won't be too complex but I would like to use it as a reason for Alex to leave his home. I want his father to be someone who is never really there for Alex and only uses him for his own selfish reasons. Alex's father will not appear in the film as a person but more of a voice perhaps saying "Oi, get me a beer!" or something needy and threatening like "Clean the f*cking kitchen". By making their relationship toxic, its gives the story and emotion.
Visual Elements
Warm colours: I will like to add a warm colour orange to symbolizes a happy feeling and enjoyment. When Alex is out and about the use of orange to symbolize how he feels free and happy is used.
Cool colours: The use of cool colours in a film creates dullness and a sense of depression to scenes. I want the beginning of the fIlm to be cool and slowly progress into warm colours to display Alex's happiness as he roams the city.
Narration
Three act structure
My short film/music video will follow the generic and simple three-act structure. In which, there will be a problem that being abuse and the setup to introduce the lead and how he plans on to move on from where he is.
The confrontation which is where the main character begins to get to the place he wishes to go which in this case is the city.
And the resolution which will consist of beautiful shots of Melbourne and the main character as he stands there in disbelief of what he has done.
Themes
Abuse Domestic violence is a serious and complex issue that causes serious harm to its victims, although my film does address abuse, I will be focusing around physical and emotional abuse, in which a parent or caregiver will inflict intentional harm to their child whether it be mentally or physically.
:
Freedom: A simple and clean theme which symbolizes one's emotion in feeling as if they can do as they please with no restrictions holding them back.
Plot Devices
For the ending, I want it to feel complete and as if Alex has finally met peace in his life where he no longer feels bad about the abuse that he was put through as a child
The pacing in the film will be somewhat slowed down as music videos tend to be roughly 3 minutes long and I feel like having a character roam around the city for two minutes straight will be really boring
Inspiration
I will take heavy inspiration from many projects, there is a scene in Stranger Things, where the boys are riding the bikes. I really like the look of the camera riding alongside them and wish to adapt it to my film.
I am also inspired by previous Cheltenham Secondary student, Zavier Lam's work in which he creates a powerful music video with him and his brother which I feel has the same type of energy that I would like to put into my work.'
I really like the colour scheme of David Finch's films where he has monochromatic colors which create an eerie and unsettling feeling in his films
