What obstacles hinder the attainment of peace, justice and strong institutions within our society?
Discrimination
Discrimination in the workplace continues to be an issue in our society. This type of discrimination creates an atmosphere where individuals feel disempowered and as though they're unable to fully contribute to the workforce.
Racial Discrimination is no new issue to our society. Stemming from slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. This type of discrimination fosters distrust and further divide amongst communities.
In the workplace, Sex discrimination involves treating someone (an applicant or employee) unfavorably because of that person's sex, including the person's sexual orientation, gender identity, or pregnancy (US Equal Opportunity Employment Commission).
Age discrimination occurs when someone is treated less-favorably due to their age. Over 2/3 of workers between the age of 45-74 say they have witnessed or experienced age discrimination.
One issue many face is with religious discrimination, which is when individuals are treated differently or unfairly because of their religious beliefs. According to Pew Research Center, 17% of individuals nationwide have been affected by religious discrimination (Pew Research Center, 2021)..

Institutional Corruption
Russia is perceived as the "most corrupt" country globally. Russia's corruption rate is 28%, against a global average of 48%.
Corruption directly causes a decrease in investment, a decline of human capital, and political instability, and therefore indirectly inhibits economic growth.
Corruption discourages growth and deepens poverty, weakening institutions.
Corruption within the justice system is difficult to expose and challenging to prove, which impedes prosecution for corrupt behavior.

Historical Conflict
-
Labor rights have played a crucial role in our nation's history. Until the introduction of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, women did not have the right to work.

Even today, the American Civil War continues to impact our society. With issues such as race and the unity as a Nation, it is still very much so relevant today.
Native Americans continue to struggle today due to United States government often failing to address the historical grievances and ongoing challenges they face. We should urge our government representatives to prioritize this issue and respect the sovereignty of the Native American tribes.
Throughout United States history, there have been many labor conflicts with workers fighting for equal pay, safe working conditions and the right to work which, unfortunately, continues to affect many today despite the progress that has been made.
