Introduction to Organic Chemistry
3.1
Definitions
Molecular Formula - actual number of atoms of each element present in molecule
Empirical Formula - simplest whole number ratio of atoms
Structural Formula - Shows how atoms in molecule are arranged
Displayed formula - shows all atoms and bonds in molecule
Skeletal Formula - shows shape of carbon skeleton
Homologous Series - Same functional group and same general formula - different carbon length
Functional Group - atom or group of atom which gives an organic compound its physical properties
Hydrocarbons
Compounds with only C and H
Saturated - contains one or more C - C bonds
Unsaturated - contains one or more C=C bonds
Aliphatic (chains)
Alicyclic (rings)
Aromatic (benzene ring)
Isomerism
Structural Isomerism
Position Isomers, Chain Isomer, Functional Group Isomer
Same Molecular formula but different Structural Formula
Stereoisomerism
Optical Isomerism, E/Z isomers
Molecules with the same structural formula but different arrangement of atoms in space
