The Black Panthers
Founded to challenge police brutality against the African American community. Emphasized Black power, community control, and unification for civil rights.
The Little Rock Nine
A group of black students that were the first ones to integrate into an all-white high school as a test of integration brought on by Brown v. Board of Education.

Jim Crow Laws
A collection of state and local statues that legalized racial segregation. Began as early as 1865, immediately after the ratification of the 13th amendment, abolishing slavery.

Plessy V. Ferguson: Separate but Equal doctrine; ruled that racial segregation laws did NOT violate the U.S. Constitution.

Civil Rights Act of 1964
Intended to end discrimination. Gave federal law enforcement agencies the power to prevent racial discrimination in employment, voting, and the use of public facilities.
The constitutionality of the act was challenged and upheld by Supreme Court in the case of Heart of Atlanta Motel V. United Sates.
